The Washington Commanders have been hard at work this offseason to put last year’s 5-12 season behind them, as they try to recapture the magic that led them to the NFC Championship game in the 2024 season. Health being on Washington’s side will play a big role in that pursuit, but so will the performance of the team’s new additions.
While the Commanders have an exciting group of newcomers who were added through free agency and the draft, many people would say Washington’s work shouldn’t be finished yet. Radio host Eric Bickel, of The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan, recently expressed his desire for the team to bring back veteran receiver Deebo Samuel.

Commanders being encouraged to re-sign offensive playmaker Deebo Samuel
Bickel explained that Samuel was apparently loved in Washington’s building, and argued that the team could still use his playmaking. The radio host expressed how Samuel has a contiguous positivity to him, energizing the entire team with the plays he makes. Washington could benefit from both the plays and the energy, so the franchise should explore re-signing the receiver.
The Commanders traded a fifth-round pick for Samuel last offseason, and the wideout only had one year left on his contract. Playing that year out in Washington, Samuel had a productive season, despite the team as a whole underwhelming. In 16 games, he caught 72 passes for 727 yards and five touchdowns, while also adding 75 rushing yards and one additional touchdown on the ground. Samuel was even a special teams contributor, returning 15 kicks for 452 yards.
Now, the veteran is still a free agent, and Washington has a wide receiver room that could use some more help. Of course, the team has Terry McLaurin, and the franchise drafted Antonio Williams out of Clemson in the third round, but the group as a whole remains the team’s biggest question mark.
That’s why the Commanders have consistently been brought up as a likely landing spot for Samuel’s former teammate, San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers have made it clear Aiyuk won’t play for them again, but they are also holding on to him until they get a trade package they deem worthy. Washington clearly hasn’t put one together yet, or Aiyuk would be a Commander.
However that situation unfolds, Washington will still have to consider bringing Deebo Samuel back.
