The Washington Commanders kept very few players from Ron Rivera's stint as head coach. General manager Adam Peters gutted a roster in desperate need of rejuvenation, but there were a few exceptions who proved their worth.
Jeremy Reaves was among them. And for the second straight summer, the safety has been rewarded for his exceptional commitment and leadership with another deal.
The team confirmed that Reaves has signed a one-year extension, keeping him on the books for two more seasons. This was met with jubilation from the fan base on social media, which is a testament to the esteem in which everyone associated with the franchise holds him.
Commanders extend Jeremy Reaves two days before his wedding in emotional move
This is a week that Reaves will not forget in a hurry. The All-Pro special-teamer is getting married on Saturday. Two days before, he's got some extra financial security as an early present from the Commanders.
Reaves was an undersized, undrafted afterthought who fought through some significant adversity to firmly establish himself. His responsibilities increased last season, resulting in his most defensive snaps to date. Even if the South Alabama product does revert to a special-teams role in 2026, he'll tackle it with his customary enthusiasm and relentless drive.
As for what got Reaves this far? Self-belief, and he urged everyone to do the same.
“It does not matter what people believe about you or what people think about you or what stats or numbers or any of that stuff says about you. The belief starts with you."
A lot to celebrate this week huh?!? I love yall man, thank you 100 times over! Best fans in the world ❤️

This is a heartwarming rags-to-riches story. Reaves wasn't given a shot, but he forced one anyway. Instead of wondering what might happen, he embraced a fresh challenge under head coach Dan Quinn, growing as a leader whom others willingly follow. The culture shift was made for him, and Peters knows just how important having a glue-guy like this is to the team.
The Commanders signed Nick Cross to bolster their safety room. More arrivals could be on the way, leaving several facing an uncertain future. Reaves has no such worries, and Washington's locker room will be much better off for having the defensive back around for the next two years.
Reaves has been through the good and bad times throughout his eight-year stay in Washington so far. If he gets through this extension, he'll have lasted a decade with the club. Considering all the upheaval — rebrands, head coaches, general managers, and owners — that represents a monumental achievement.
And for any incoming players who don't hear their names called during the 2026 NFL Draft, Reaves should be an inspiration to them all.
