Commanders fans might be overlooking what Dan Campbell already knows

This was high praise that continues to go unnoticed.

General manager Adam Peters still needs more in the cornerback room. The Washington Commanders haven't done enough to strengthen the unit, with only one veteran piece coming into the fold so far.

The contentious move to acquire Amik Robertson to kick things off in free agency didn't go down well with everybody. However, some previous comments from Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell should be enough to put Commanders fans at ease.

Robertson wasn't a big splash. He signed a modest deal, and the former Louisiana Tech standout isn't the most physically imposing either. It'll be interesting to see what new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones has planned for the player, but Campbell thinks it'll be substantial.

Commanders fans skeptical of Amik Robertson should listen to Dan Campbell

Campbell made no secret about the strengths Robertson brings to the table. The no-nonsense coach outlined his on-field skill set, but his relentless approach to everything and his ability to inspire others could be equally important to the Commanders' transition to Jones's schematic concepts.

"Great guy. Great guy to have. He’s a skilled player, and he’s tenacious, he’s feisty. He’s confident, and teammates love his energy because he does, he brings it all the time. He brings it in practice, brings it in the games, he’s a ball guy. And he is, he’s one of those guys that sparks our defense, the other guys around him.”

The Commanders released four-time Pro Bowl corner Marshon Lattimore as expected. Jonathan Jones left for the rival Philadelphia Eagles, and Noah Igbinoghene landed with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. None will be missed all that much if suitable replacements can be found, so Robertson's approach will be integral to any success that comes Washington's way.

Expecting miracles from Robertson would be unrealistic. He gives maximum effort but tends to struggle against bigger receivers. Having Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil to pick up the slack will help. That won't suffice to cope with some impressive passing attacks on Washington's schedule next season.

It's not hard to see why the Commanders were enamored with Robertson. He's a strong locker room presence with the never-say-attitude that should slot seamlessly into the culture head coach Dan Quinn has built. But if Washington tasks him with significant starting reps, it's also not hard to see where the complications could arise.

Peters will know more is required. The Commanders could take someone like LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane at No. 7 overall, especially after his blistering pro day showcase. There are some decent free agents remaining on the market, including former Quinn protégé Trevon Diggs. That could slightly diminish Robertson's role, but he's adaptable enough to roll with the punches.

Campbell knows it. And soon, Commanders fans might too.
