Commanders fans floored by Dan Quinn's alarming plan for replacing key starter

Surely, Washington can do better than this, right?

The Washington Commanders chose not to explore trading veteran center Tyler Biadasz before releasing him in February. Why the club didn't try recouping any value they could remains unclear, though that's somehow not even the strangest part of this mysterious saga.

Washington seemingly moved on from Biadasz, who's since joined the Los Angeles Chargers, without an alternative, and it shows. The Commanders have yet to replace him despite spending the third-most money in free agency to date. Whether by design or not, his unceremonious exit from D.C. has understandably raised more questions than answers, which figures to remain the case moving forward.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn addressed the media availability at the NFL's 2026 annual league meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. He revealed the team's uninspiring plan to have veterans Nick Allegretti and Julian Good-Jones compete for Biadasz's old spot (h/t Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic).

What are we doing here? How can Quinn sell turning Allegretti or Good-Jones as a viable course of action? Either would be a massive downgrade from what the Commanders had in Biadasz.

Biadasz's efforts in 2025 earned him a 70.7 overall Pro Football Focus grade, good for 11th among 40 qualified centers. He fared well as both a pass- and run-blocker. Either the Commanders are underestimating his value, are keeping coy about their plans to replace him or have unreasonable faith in Allegretti/Good-Jones.

Allegretti was a career backup before landing with the Commanders in 2024, and it's easy to see why. He was benched after just two games at right guard this past campaign. Yet, Washington is suddenly willing to bet on him successfully changing positions, illustrated by his surprising contract extension in the wake of Biadasz's departure.

Then there's Good-Jones, who was undrafted out of Iowa State in 2020. He spent 2021 and 2022 in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member of the Calgary Stampeders. The Commanders signed him in 2023, and his lone appearance with them came in that season.

Meanwhile, Biadasz is an established commodity and in his prime (turns 29 in November). It didn't take long for the one-time Pro Bowler to find a new home with the Chargers. They made him one of the highest-paid players at his position, too, so he ostensibly had a market.
