Commanders subtly expose the Cowboys' target driving their defensive urgency

Here we go...

Finding motivation has not been difficult for the Washington Commanders so far this offseason. There is a real eagerness to erase the disappointment of last year's woeful efforts, and the right tone has already been set by veterans and new arrivals alike before the pre-summer break.

But every little helps, as evidenced by one clip from mandatory minicamp that made the primary target in 2026 obvious

It was nothing more than an edge-rushing drill. The Commanders worked on body control and bend off the snap. However, the coaching staff was using the 'Here we go' cadence made famous by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Commanders' new-look defense has Dak Prescott in their proverbial crosshairs

If that gave players an extra bit of reason to put in maximum effort, so be it.

Prescott has tormented the Commanders for years. He's an outstanding quarterback with two prolific wide receivers — CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens — to depend upon. Washington has beaten the Cowboys on a couple of occasions over the last two seasons, but the defense has found Dallas' offense incredibly difficult to counteract.

There is hope that this will change in 2026.

General manager Adam Peters prioritized defensive reinforcements this offseason, and he was right to do so. All three levels received a significant boost. The presence of coordinator Daronte Jones raises intrigue. If everything goes well, this unit could be much more competitive when the regular season commences.

Peters spared no expense to find the edge-rushing upgrades needed to give Prescott and other quarterbacks in the division a much harder time.

Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, and Charles Omenihu were acquired in free agency. Joshua Josephs was taken in the fifth round. Deatrich Wise Jr. and Drake Jackson were re-signed. With Dorance Armstrong Jr. also making encouraging progress from a knee injury, this looks like a deep group capable of wreaking havoc.

That's a positive, but the Cowboys won't be pushovers.

They normally get hyped up and embroiled in their own drama, but things are much quieter around the building this offseason. It's more understated, which isn't a bad thing. And given the enhancements to its roster, Dallas quietly fancies its chances if everyone stays healthy.

The Commanders are planning to meet fire with fire. There is real pressure to make strides, and it must be a collective effort. Third-year quarterback Jayden Daniels staying injury-free is paramount, but Jones' defense must also meet its end of the bargain within a more creative, aggressive system.

Getting the better of Prescott in this bitter, historical rivalry with the Cowboys is a primary objective. And the Commanders are subtly making that crystal clear.
