Emmanuel Forbes Jr. was the wrong draft pick for the Washington Commanders. It didn't take long for general manager Adam Peters to see that once he took charge, but a new opportunity quickly arrived with the Los Angeles Rams.

However, the cornerback's future looks shakier than ever after a blockbuster trade that shook the NFL to its foundations.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams are acquiring All-Pro corner Trent McDuffie for significant draft compensation, including the No. 29 overall pick and a third-rounder next year. The player is expected to secure a lucrative long-term commitment immediately, which pushes Forbes further down the pecking order as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.

Forbes flashed moments of promise last season. However, he was also actively targeted as a weak link in key moments by opposing offenses with great success. His run defense is nothing short of abysmal, and the size concerns that dominated his pre-draft projections remain a source of frustration.

The Rams' secondary overall wasn't great in 2025. It didn't stop them from making and gaining success in the playoffs, but general manager Les Snead wasn't going to sit on his hands when an opportunity like this presented itself. With NFL MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford coming back, and Super Bowl 61 being held at SoFi Stadium, they are going all in.

What that means for Forbes' outlook remains to be seen. He's cheap to keep around with a cap hit of $2.85 million, so the Mississippi State product will at least get the chance to fight for his roster spot. But if any further enhancements arrive in the cornerback room, he could be on the outside looking in.

Ron Rivera saw something in Forbes that just wasn't there. Taking him over Christian Gonzalez was arguably his most egregious draft mistake, which is saying something. The New England Patriots' star is about to reset the cornerback market, while Forbes is fighting to avoid being cut by his second club. That speaks volumes about the former Commanders head coach's inability to correctly evaluate personnel.

Forbes has overcome plenty of adversity over the last three years. That will stand him in good stead ahead of yet another crucial offseason, but the trade for McDuffie doesn't exactly send out the most positive signals about his role in Los Angeles next season.

The Rams have raised the stakes in no uncertain terms. If Forbes doesn't respond accordingly, he could be heading for the proverbial scrapheap once again.
