The NFC East promises to be much more competitive next season. It's been an arms race over the offseason, with every Washington Commanders opponent within the division seemingly getting stronger. And with Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown set to be traded after June 1, things could get even tighter.
Every move matters. The margin for error is getting slimmer, and the Commanders have confidence that last year's complete capitulation was nothing more than a blip on their road to long-term prosperity.
Based on an intriguing development elsewhere in the division, it could provide an added bonus in their quest for the crown.
Commanders will be praying Dallas signs Adoree' Jackson after recent visit
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Dallas Cowboys hosted cornerback Adoree' Jackson for a visit this week. No deal has been formally announced, but the Commanders will be hoping owner/general manager Jerry Jones takes the plunge.
Big things were expected of Jackson when the Tennessee Titans took him at No. 18 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent four years in the AFC South before moving to the New York Giants. The production gradually began to decline, but the Eagles took a chance on the veteran last offseason.
Things completely spiraled for Jackson in Philadelphia. His ability in coverage waned, as evidenced by his 54.1 grade from Pro Football Focus. This ranked 90th among all qualifying cornerbacks, and things weren't much better in run support. Unsurprisingly, the Eagles didn't keep him around, but the Cowboys may see something in the USC product that can be salvaged.
The Cowboys' defense was an abomination last season. Trading edge rusher Micah Parsons was a franchise-altering call that did not work in their favor initially. Trading for defensive line Quinnen Williams helped turn the tide slightly, and drafting safety Caleb Downs should be another asset under new coordinator Christian Parker.
Maybe Jackson just got a courtesy call from the Cowboys after working closely with Parker last season. But everyone in the NFC East, including the Commanders, will be praying that a deal is agreed.
Jackson's potential arrival in Dallas isn't exactly going to strike fear into anyone at this stage of his career. The Commanders have some questions to answer at the receiver position behind Terry McLaurin, but the scheme David Blough is implementing should make everyone better. And when they come up against the Cowboys, their cornerback options right now could be something to exploit.
It might eventually come to nothing. But it shows Dallas is already turning to desperate measures to avoid being left behind.
