Commanders draft Ahmad Moten Sr.
- Defensive Line | Miami Hurricanes
- Round No. 2 | Pick No. 40
The Washington Commanders may have some issues to address in the defensive trenches this offseason. This need will become even more glaring if general manager Adam Peters decides not to give Daron Payne a lucrative contract extension.
Payne has played well this season. Paying him on another deal worth around $20 million a year or more is a big risk, and Peters may opt to spend his money elsewhere.
That makes finding a cheaper solution during the 2027 NFL Draft imperative. If Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman Ahmad Moten Sr. is still around when the Commanders go on the clock in the second round, they need to have a serious discussion.
Moten has a combination of size and length that gives him an NFL-caliber platform to build on. He's got a ferocious bull rush, and while he needs to improve his play strength against the run, those issues are easy to fix.
Commanders draft Braelin Moore
- Center | LSU Tigers
- Round No. 3 | Pick No. 72
The Commanders made a big gamble at the center position this offseason. Adam Peters hitched his wagon to Nick Allegretti, but the veteran failed to meet the required standards and is now sidelined as a backup.
Allegretti lost his starting job to Lucas Patrick, who was signed after an abysmal Week 1 performance from the Super Bowl winner against the Philadelphia Eagles. This doesn't look like anything more than a band-aid fix for a long-term issue, so Peters needs to address this need with a viable long-term solution during the offseason.
Braelin Moore might be a little undersized, which could hurt his stock. But if these concerns lead him to fall into the third round, the Commanders could do a lot worse.
Moore is a plus athlete and a borderline elite pass protector at the college level. He lacks length, but he more than makes up for it with athleticism. But bulking up will be crucial once he gets to the pros.
Commanders draft Bryant Wesco Jr.
- Wide Receiver | Clemson Tigers
- Round No. 4 | Pick No. 112
The Commanders need more in their wide receiver room moving forward. Right now, only third-round rookie Antonio Williams would be considered a potential long-term piece, and that includes Terry McLaurin.
Washington is at a contract crossroads with McLaurin, and it's hard to say how things will unfold. Stefon Diggs is only on a one-year deal, and the rest couldn't be classed as anything other than complementary pieces. Given the need to surround quarterback Jayden Daniels with everything he needs to thrive, this has to change.
Going down the free-agent or trade route is an option. The cheaper solutions are hidden in the draft, and Bryant Wesco Jr. could be a rough diamond for the Commanders to mold.
Wesco has the size to be a mismatch. He's a polished route-runner and a threat after the catch. The Clemson prospect must be stronger to get off press coverage, but the upside is evident.
