Commanders draft Yhonzae Pierre
- Edge Rusher | Alabama Crimson Tide
- Round No. 2 | Pick No. 37
The Washington Commanders may not desperately need help on the defensive edge right now, but that could change. And with money getting tighter as contract extensions loom, the Commanders should consider going down the draft route early.
Odafe Oweh is a long-term piece, and Joshua Josephs is an intriguing rotational development project. But Dorance Armstrong Jr. and K'Lavon Chaisson are both out of contract, and it's unlikely that both will return.
If Yhonzae Pierre makes it out of the first round and into Washington's lap here, general manager Adam Peters might take the plunge. He might not be the biggest, but his explosiveness and versatility are traits defensive coordinator Daronte Jones looks for.
Pierre's short-range explosiveness is off the charts, and he's getting better from a discipline standpoint. While there could be some issues with strength and power, they are correctable with a little extra work in the weight room.
Commanders draft Vicari Swain
- Cornerback | South Carolina Gamecocks
- Round No. 3 | Pick No. 69
The Commanders should also look for a new cornerback in the draft, though this might not be the glaring need some envision.
Amik Robertson has been sensational at the start of the season. Trey Amos is now back, and the 2025 second-round pick has long-term starting potential. Rasul Douglas could also be in line for another short-term commitment if his positive early displays continue.
Douglas isn't getting any younger. So even if he does get a new deal, Adam Peters must keep the bigger picture in mind. But with Mike Sainristil struggling to regain his form, they need another option.
Vicari Swain is worth a look at this stage of the draft. He is sticky in coverage, can hold his own in press, and boasts exceptional body control. If the South Carolina product can work on his eye discipline, someone could have a steal on Day 2.
Commanders draft Braelin Moore
- Center | LSU Tigers
- Round No. 4 | Pick No. 106
Everyone knows that the Commanders completely botched their plans at center this offseason. That's not up for discussion.
Adam Peters placed way too much faith in Nick Allegretti, and there was no legitimate contingency plan after missing out on prized free agent Tyler Linderbaum. Lucas Patrick is now starting, but he's nothing more than a band-aid fix to a problem the general manager brought on himself.
Washington must find a long-term solution. And the best place to do that is in the draft.
Anyone who's read my mock drafts in recent weeks knows how high I am on Braelin Moore. He is the definition of a mid-round diamond, boasting accomplished production at both Virginia Tech and LSU during his five-year college career.
He may be a little undersized, but Moore's pass protection is exceptional. He knows how to gain leverage, and if he adds a little more play strength in the NFL, he could be a starting-caliber option sooner rather than later.
