These Commanders won’t make it past December (and everyone knows it)

The end of their time in Washington could be near.

Joe Whitt Jr. - Commanders DC

Dan Quinn faced a gut-wrenching decision shortly before the bye week. The Washington Commanders' defense was an ongoing embarrassment, lacking motivation or organization. They didn't look prepared, and the players failed to execute the game plan. The head coach finally saw what was unfolding in front of his eyes, taking over defensive play-calling responsibilities from coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.

This was no doubt difficult. Quinn and Whitt developed a strong bond during their time together with the Dallas Cowboys. There is trust and a close bond between the two, but the assistant knew what was coming after one capitulation too many.

The improvements displayed against the Miami Dolphins, although they weren't the best opposition, suggest that Whitt was the problem. That's up for debate, but if the same trend continues in the coming weeks, the Commanders will be on the lookout for a new defensive coordinator during the offseason.

Jeremy McNichols - Commanders RB

The Commanders' running back dynamic will be something fans are going to monitor closely during the offseason. Chris Rodriguez Jr. has taken over lead responsibilities and is doing more than enough for another commitment from general manager Adam Peters. Although seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt's meteoric rise has slowed considerably, he should improve with another offseason to hone his craft.

That gives the Commanders two promising running backs, but it won't be enough. And any new arrivals could push established veteran Jeremy McNichols out of the equation when push comes to shove.

McNichols made the 53-man roster comfortably during the summer. He's been a bit-part player again, but has flashed promise when his number is called. There is also a lot to like about his special teams efforts, so of all the names on this list, the former Boise State standout could be the one who gets a reprieve.

However, that is no guarantee by any stretch of the imagination.

Jonathan Jones - Commanders CB

As previously mentioned, the Commanders' secondary has been a massive disappointment this season. Most fans and experts were expecting this area of the field to become one of strength for head coach Dan Quinn. It turned out to be the complete opposite, so a significant rethink is needed to get things back on track.

There will be several personnel changes. There could even be some staffing alterations for good measure. Either way, things don't look especially promising for Jonathan Jones.

The Commanders signed Jones this offseason. He's a two-time Super Bowl winner who was expected to provide an assured presence on the rotation with the experience of going deep into the postseason to depend upon. Unfortunately, injuries and inconsistent performances have dented his ability to make a considerable impact.

Jones thought he was joining a contending force. That wasn't the case, so he's probably looking forward to embracing a new challenge when he hits free agency next spring.
