Training camp is in full swing, and a massive star is starting to emerge on the field in Ashburn.

And no, it's not quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Whether it's media, players, coaches, or fans, everyone has noticed the impact being made by second-year cornerback Mike Sainristil. His rookie exploits were nothing short of exceptional in testing circumstances. The former Michigan standout isn't settling. Instead, he's looking to propel himself to a completely different stratosphere in Year 2 of his professional career.

There have been several notable standouts at camp so far. One could make a strong case for Sainristil clearing them all, and there is a secret ingredient igniting him to even greater heights this summer.

Mike Sainristil is leaning on Deebo Samuel for second-year Commanders surge

Sainristil revealed during his media availability that wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. is helping him turn things up a notch. The defensive back acknowledged the competition factor in going up against the All-Pro in practice. However, the wideout is also working closely with him on the nuances needed to excel further.

"I've appreciated having him on the opposite side of it, because I just know that every single rep is going to get me better and get him better. I feel like that's what I needed, to have somebody like him who's going to push me and help me get better. We've done extra things after practice. Whether it's walk-through tempo or jog tempo, it doesn't matter. Every single day, we're going to battle, we're going to compete. You're going to get better, I'm going to get better."

Anyone still on the fence about the Commanders' acquiring Samuel via trade from the San Francisco 49ers shouldn't be. The versatile offensive weapon looks like a man reborn. He's healthy, in tremendous shape, and came into the building looking to help others. This is a far cry from the accusations surrounding his commitment during his final days with the NFC West club.

Samuel is no doubt having a positive impact on Sainristil. Learning from one of the game's best is only going to help his cause. This bears more significance when one considers that two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin is not practicing due to an ankle problem as his contract stalemate with the Commanders continues.

Washington's cornerback unit has been dominant over camp to date. That hasn't stopped Samuel from making a splash, but it's a positive development as the defense looks to catch up to the team's offensive prowess with Daniels and Kliff Kingsbury leading the charge.

And if Sainristil takes another surge forward, Samuel's input will be a big reason why.
