General manager Adam Peters has almost no margin for error during the 2026 NFL Draft. He's got six picks, two of which are in the first four rounds. Maximizing every asset is crucial if the Washington Commanders want to prove their 2025 campaign was a blip on their road to perennial contention.
Hidden gems and potential steals are required after Washington's pick at No. 7 overall. One possible option made things more difficult for Peters after a dazzling display of athleticism and efficiency at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.
It's no secret that Washington needs more at the tight end position. The door hasn't been completely closed on Zach Ertz returning. He is making encouraging progress and wants to be back for Week 1. But with questions around Ben Sinnott's development and John Bates being a blocking specialist, more dynamism is no doubt required.
Sam Roush could be an intriguing option for Commanders on Day 2
Sam Roush is an interesting candidate. The Stanford prospect ascended with every passing season in college. While his athletic traits were nowhere near Oregon's Kenyon Sadiq during on-field drills in Indianapolis, his performance did nothing to diminish his chances of being taken at some stage on Day 2.
Roush clocked in at 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which included a 1.61-second split over 10 yards. His 38.5-inch vertical jump and 10-foot, six-inch broad jump were decent enough. This was followed by showcasing his pass-catching abilities, rounding off a successful session.
This won't have gone unnoticed. Roush has many likable traits that suggest he can become a prominent figure immediately. There are concerns about the number of drops in college, and the blocking technique needs refinement, but this could be a high-value selection for Washington if he drops into the third round.
Obviously, much will depend on what sort of additions the Commanders can make in free agency. Their moves will also tell fans all they need to know about how Sinnott's growth is being perceived by those in power.
New offensive coordinator David Blough stated during his introductory press conference that Sinnott has a long way to go. He's still young enough to make progress, but the fact that he remains something of an unknown quantity two years into his professional career isn't the most encouraging sign.
As for Roush? He improved his chances of being among the first tight ends taken. His 87 athleticism score ranked third for his position. If he figures out how to turn his skills into more consistency in all phases, someone is going to have a significant steal on their hands.
Whether that'll be the Commanders or not is another matter.
