Washington Commanders 2024 practice squad roster: Full list - updated 8/29
By Dean Jones
After the Washington Commanders opted not to put in waiver claims following the team's final cuts, general manager Adam Peters set about molding his practice squad for the 2024 season. This unfortunately couldn't include edge rusher K.J. Henry or cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, who got scooped up by the Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers respectively.
Practice squad members have become increasingly important since the NFL moved to a 17-game campaign. They can be elevated onto the actice roster three times before teams are forced to make the move up permanent. This provides some extra leeway in case of injuries and ensures players are fully aware of their schematic responsibilities rather than being dragged off the street and thrown into the fire.
Washington had 16 spots to fill and plenty of options at their disposal. Most are usually filled by those with upside who didn't quite make the initial 53-man roster. Considering how Peters has acquired fresh faces almost at will throughout a frantic offseason of recruitment, the prospect of some new additions coming to the mix couldn't be ruled out either.
The Commanders look almost unrecognizable from the setup that stumbled their way through another season of misery and underachievement in 2023. Nobody is expecting them to produce miracles in Year 1 of such a drastic rebuild. They're on the right track with an improved infrastructure led by Peters. Just how long it'll take to emerge from obscurity and back into contention is another matter.
Some names on the practice squad were obvious. Others came out of the blue. All of them will get their chance to contribute. It might not be right away, but every role is important if the Commanders want to drag themselves from the proverbial abyss and back to respectability.
Here's how the Commanders' practice squad looks heading into Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There will be more arrivals. The Commanders have salary-cap space for some more acquisitions depending on what options become available. It's just a case of finding the right guys who fit into the team's core ethos.
Things are taking shape. Plans are becoming finalized. But looking at the financial resources and draft capital available, this could change quickly.
