Stay or go? Predicting the future of 2024 Commanders free agents at midseason
By Dean Jones
David Bada - Commanders DT (ERFA)
Another early restricted free agent, David Bada finds himself on injured/reserve. After he caught the eye during limited involvement last season, this was a body blow to not only his development but also to his future with the Washington Commanders.
Verdict: Departure
It doesn't seem feasible for the Commanders to place any sort of tender on Bada. Therefore, expect the formidable defensive tackle to depart when it's time for the free-agent frenzy to begin.
Efe Obada - Commanders DL
Efe Obada has carved out a real niche for himself since entering the league. He's a sound and versatile presence on the defensive front, which is matched by some decent production as a rotational piece throughout his career.
Verdict: Departure
If the Commanders had a choice, they'd likely want to keep Casey Toohill and James Smith-Williams over Obada. However, the player's relentless work ethic might also be enough to give cause for pause where those in positions of power are concerned.
Jeremy Reaves - Commanders S
To say Jeremy Reaves endured some rough luck this season would be an understatement. The All-Pro special teamer suffered a serious injury that required surgery after just five games, which brought an uncertain future after the Commanders tendered the defensive back last spring rather than give him long-term financial security.
Verdict: Extension (if injury prognosis is good)
If Reaves makes good progress in his rehabilitation, the Commanders should give him the benefit of the doubt with another short-term deal. After everything he's given the franchise since joining in 2018, he's earned that at least.
Cornelius Lucas - Commanders OT
Cornelius Lucas is what every team looks for in a swing offensive tackle. He's dependable, versatile, and has no trouble stepping into the breach effectively to ensure no momentum is lost - something the Commanders have already benefitted from this season.
Verdict: Extension
It could be another offseason of changes to the offensive line - especially if Washington decides to build around Sam Howell. However, having Lucas around makes a ton of sense all things considered.
