The Washington Commanders are moving forward with Jayden Daniels as their franchise quarterback. His exceptional offseason and starring performance during his preseason debut at the New York Jets has fans dreaming of great things with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft under center. This is the easily the most important piece of the puzzle where general manager Adam Peters' ambitious rebuild is concerned.

Dan Quinn and the coaching staff have a plan in place to ensure Daniels hits the ground running in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He didn't see much time on the field at MetLife Stadium, but those in power believe getting some reps into the signal-caller is beneficial before his competitive NFL debut.

This is the correct approach. At the same time, all it takes is one play to see their plans in tatters.

Commanders given cautionary tale with J.J. McCarthy injury news

A cautionary tale emerged courtesy of the Minnesota Vikings. Despite J.J. McCarthy impressing in the team's preseason opener, a complication emerged that took him out of the firing line. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed the former Michigan standout tore the meniscus in his right knee. He could miss between 4-to-6 weeks according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, paving the way for veteran Sam Darnold to get yet another opportunity from a starting berth.

Adam Schefter of ESPN noted the two separate timelines in play. This comes with a much more severe outlook depending on how things go.

McCarthy needs surgery, which is a body blow to the player and Minnesota's short-term aspirations. It's unlikely to alter Quinn's plan of attack with Daniels, but it's another example of how quickly things can change.

Daniels isn't the most physically imposing quarterback. He took a lot of hits in college and needs to adopt a different mindset to keep himself out of harm's way. Durability was arguably his biggest concern during pre-draft assessments - something the Commanders are striving to manage effectively.

The Heisman Trophy winner relies on being creative and improvising. Taking that away from his game just because there's a bigger risk of getting hurt is strategizing scared.

It's about finding the right balance. The Commanders have done a good job of that up to now, so changing their approach just because of an unfortunate incident elsewhere is reactionary and unprofessional.

McCarthy is determined to get back and help the Vikings at some stage during the campaign. Much will depend on how Darnold performs, but they've been thrilled with the 2024 first-round pick's progress. Hopefuilly, this is nothing more than a bump in the road.

As for Daniels? He'll stay on his current path and trust the coaches to put him in the best possible position to thrive. Everything is going according to plan so far. He's transitioned seamlessly and looks set to take the league by storm. He's added weight to cope with the NFL's physical punishment. All signs are pointing up.

The Commanders are moving forward with a sense of positivity at long last. Daniels getting hurt would be nothing short of catastrophic. Hopefully, things go as smoothly as they have throughout his first offseason with the franchise.
