Some huge decisions await the Washington Commanders in free agency. How many players will new general manager Adam Peters retain?

This is one of the most important offseasons in Washington Commanders franchise history. A new era dawns with Josh Harris' ownership group leading the charge. Adam Peters is the front-office leader tasked with molding a roster capable of being more competitive. Head coach Dan Quinn will put the strategies in place throughout a busy few months.

It didn't take long for the Commanders to put their grand offseason plans into action. It's been a frantic few weeks. There is a lot of hard work ahead, but the early signs are extremely positive.

Peters and Quinn will be assessing how best to utilize their vast resources. This also includes deciding the fate of Washington's free agents in the coming weeks before they become available to others.

Washington's roster is going to look completely different by the time OTAs roll around. We can pretty much guarantee that. How will this impact the Commanders' free-agent class of 2024? Let's break it down.

Complete list of Commanders free agents 2024

Unrestricted free agents

Any unrestricted free agent can sign with another team from March 13 according to league rules. The Commanders have just a few short weeks to offer extensions and perhaps even utilize the franchise tag if necessary.

  • WR Curtis Samuel
  • CB Kendall Fuller
  • QB Jacoby Brissett
  • LB Cody Barton
  • OT Cornelius Lucas
  • S Jeremy Reaves
  • DE Efe Obada
  • LB Khaleke Hudson
  • C Tyler Larsen
  • LB David Mayo
  • RB Antonio Gibson
  • K Joey Slye
  • WR/KR Jamison Crowder
  • WR Byron Pringle
  • OL Saahdiq Charles
  • S Terrell Burgess
  • S Kamren Curl
  • DE James Smith-Williams
  • DL Casey Toohill

Exclusive rights free agents

If the Commanders want to keep any of these around, they must put an exclusive rights tender on them before free agency. This will prevent them from speaking to other teams and ensure they stick around for another season at least.

  • DT David Bada
  • TE Brandon Dillon
  • DT Curtis Brooks
  • LS Tucker Addington
  • OT Alex Akingbulu

Restricted free agents

For restricted free agents, they can be placed under first or second-round tenders. There is also a right to first refusal option. If the Commanders decide not to match any offer from elsewhere, they'll be compensated accordingly.

  • LB Jabril Cox

Who could the Commanders bring back in free agency?

Looking at the current state of affairs and how poorly the team performed in 2023, it's hard to say how many will be brought back. Promising young safety Kamren Curl could be extended depending on the money involved. The Commanders might also make a concerted effort to keep veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller after another impressive campaign.

Much will depend on what wide receiver Curtis Samuel wants. The versatile offensive weapon has a lot of likable traits that should slot into Kliff Kingsbury's system well. But if the financial demands are too high, the Commanders have enough assets to look elsewhere.

As for the others? Perhaps linebacker Khaleke Hudson is worth another look. Terrell Burgess made a good contribution on special teams. If Jeremy Reaves' injury prognosis is good, another one-year deal wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

Nobody would be shedding any tears if the rest were let go. Some might feel aggrieved, but there should be no sentiment attached to Peters' thought process whatsoever.
