Former Commanders QB makes Caleb Williams plea after botched Justin Fields trade
By Dean Jones
Former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III urged Caleb Williams to take drastic action after the botched Justin Fields trade.
After the Chicago Bears traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, they confirmed everyone's suspicions. They would not be passing up on a quarterback at No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft for the second straight year. In all likelihood, Caleb Williams will be the pick, although nothing has been confirmed one way or another as yet.
This has a lingering impact on the Washington Commanders, who pick at No. 2. They've also tipped their hand by trading Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks. Adam Peters wants to kick off his new regime by adding a gifted signal-caller from the college ranks to go alongside veteran Marcus Mariota, who was acquired in free agency.
All signs point to the Commanders choosing between Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. While that'll probably be the case, former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III urged Williams to take drastic measures in pursuit of joining his boyhood team this spring.

Speaking on his podcast, Griffin thought Williams should make it clear to Chicago's brass that he isn't interested in joining their project. This hasn't been done since Eli Manning refused to join the Los Angeles Chargers - favoring the New York Giants instead.
"After everything that's happened with Justin Fields, can Caleb Williams really look at that and say 'You know what, is this the organization that has my best interests at heart and they're going to help me develop into the player I want to be?' Caleb Williams is on record saying he wants to be legendary, he wants to rewrite history, and he wants to be the best he can possibly be and win the most games he can possibly win. Don't get me wrong guys, I thought Ryan Poles was having an amazing offseason up until this trade for Justin Fields. This is about Caleb Williams and what team out there gives him the best chance to be successful. Only he can deem that. Yes, I do think him going back to Washington where he's from - he's a DC kid and went to Gonzaga College High School. I think that's the best spot for him, but he has to answer that question. He does have power right now and he needs to exercise it."

It would be an obvious fairytale for Williams to lead the team he's supported since childhood into their exciting new era under Peters and Dan Quinn. Unfortunately, the Carolina Panthers trade-up for Bryce Young in 2023 and the pathetic campaign that followed put pay to their chances of being in the driver's seat. That belongs to the Bears, who seem to be placing everything around the roster to ensure their new quarterback hits the ground running.
Dreams are nice. Reality is different. Most analysts believe there is a wide gap between Williams and the others. That said, the Commanders won't be getting a bad consolation prize in either Maye or Daniels by any stretch of the imagination.
Both look like good scheme fits within Kliff Kingsbury's offense. There seems to be momentum building around Daniels being the guy, but Peters will be keeping the cards close to his chest until the big night unless Williams takes desperate measures. In this highly unlikely scenario, Washington would need to figure out a bombshell trade proposal with the vast assets at their disposal.
Some fans have been clamoring for the Commanders to go up and get Williams. Even though it's evident Chicago botched their handling of Fields' situation, it would be a shock of epic proportions if it led the USC prospect into forcing the issue regarding his NFL destination.
