Commanders need Jahan Dotson to improve

Jahan Dotson has produced 1,041 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns thus far during his fledgling NFL career spanning two seasons. Though he has been derailed at times by injury and flashed an impressive ability to get into the end zone, it has been somewhat underwhelming as someone who went No. 16 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Washington Commanders fans should not believe this subpar production is indicative of his potential. Because it's not.

The former first-round pick out of Penn State could thrive right alongside Terry McLaurin this season, especially if the run game gets going. There is enough talent on this offense for things to become increasingly efficient and simple under Kliff Kingsbury's guidance.

With Jayden Daniels' dual-threat abilities and his greatness at extending plays, Dotson could be the primary beneficiary.

Kingsbury is likely to dial up a heavy dose of downfield plays for the Commanders to take full advantage of. Dotson could also have the best year of his career and get very close to the 1,000-yard receiving mark. If not, he shouldn't be too far off this milestone if he takes on improved coaching throughout the summer.

Some have labeled Dotson as a draft bust. That seems a little short-sighted heading into Year 3 of his professional career.

Dotson is an exceptional talent who has not had his abilities taken advantage of by the previous coaching staff. With Kingsbury and Daniels in place - as well as an improved offensive line to give the quarterback more time than Sam Howell had - the change could be drastic provided everyone gets a clear run on the injury front in 2024.

Look for Doston to make a name for himself in the NFL this season. If everything goes according to plan, he's a legitimate breakout candidate with his fifth-year option decision looming.
