Jayden Daniels has left a positive mark on everybody associated with the Washington Commanders since becoming the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. The promising young quarterback made an impressive early transition and is building further momentum at training camp to raise anticipation heading into his first year in a professional environment.

Gaining the excitement of fans is one thing. Getting the same from veteran teammates is another. Fortunately for Daniels and the Commanders, this is something the former LSU star is accomplishing with minimal fuss.

Daron Payne thinks Jayden Daniels brings more modern-day qualities to the Commanders

Daron Payne is seeing first-hand what Daniels is bringing to the table. The veteran defensive tackle is looking to make things as uncomfortable as possible for the Heisman Trophy winner during scrimmages, but the Alabama product believes his mobility and ability to make outstanding throws on the move can become a more modern-day asset for the Commanders based on comments during an interview with Scott Abraham from 7 News DC.

"You know how the league's going now, so you've gotta have a running quarterback. He's super fast and he feels us in the pocket. I feel like that's good to have as a quarterback in this league because guys are rushing all day long. For him to be able to get out of the pocket and still make those throws, he's gonna be good. Those days are long gone [pocket passing]. I feel like those days ended when Eli Manning retired."

This is another glowing recommendation for Daniels. They've been plentiful throughout the offseason, so keeping his feet on the ground is critical.

Nothing is won or lost at this stage of the preparation period. Daniels knows that he'll be judged on his performance levels on game days rather than camp practices. That's the litmus test for any rookie signal-caller to determine their long-term outlook.

The Cajon High School product has a lot going for him. He's poised, carries himself extremely well, and isn't afraid to put in the hard work needed to excel. More importantly, Daniels has got the exciting traits associated with productive quarterbacks in the current era. Something that will bring fans back in the stands at Commanders Field and hopefully get the place rocking once again.

Payne is the latest in a long line of established locker room veterans who think the Commanders have something special on their hands with Daniels. Maintaining a sense of realism considering how most first-year players under center go through a rollercoaster as rookie would be wise. At the same time, the dual-threat weapon is experienced enough to hit the ground running if some early positives emerge over the first few competitive contests.

Daniels has the fate of this storied franchise in the palm of his hands. That's a lot to ask and he won't be able to do it alone. But after so many failed moves and rash gambles at football's most important position, things seem different this time around.

The Commanders will go as far as Daniels takes them. There's a long road ahead, but it's so far, so good.
