Commanders disappointment for Shaka Toney

Obviously, the news surrounding Shaka Toney's indefinite suspension for violating the league's gambling policy was disappointing. The Washington Commanders have enough to cope without the edge rusher, but there's just no telling what this blow is going to do for his overall career aspirations.

Toney could be a cut candidate given the Commanders drafted K.J. Henry and Andre Jones Jr. to bolster their pass-rushing options during the 2023 NFL Draft. But much will depend on whether the coaching staff deems keeping him around beneficial in the grand scheme of things.

When speaking about Toney's suspension via Sports Illustrated, Ron Rivera couldn't hide his sadness. Especially considering how the head coach thought things were progressing with the former Penn State standout.

"It's unfortunate and a little disappointed for the young man. I mean, he's a guy that really came on for us last year at the end of the season and with what's going on, obviously it's something that he's dealing with on his own with his agent and the league. So for us, we've just gotta be able to move forward and hopefully in a year's time, we'll see what happens."

All signs point to this not ending well for Toney in Washington. And when push comes to shove, the only person to blame is himself.

Whether you agree with the stipulations in place or not, they are NFL law. Given Calvin Ridley's situation last season, it's mindless for the latest group of suspendees to follow the same path.
