Commanders draft Jayden Daniels in 2024 mock

As previously mentioned, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sam Howell get another shot at being the starting quarterback in 2024. However, the Washington Commanders are moving dangerously close to having a top-three selection in the draft.

With the New England Patriots beating the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football, Bill Belichick's men and the Arizona Cardinals are one game behind the Commanders, who currently sit at No. 4 in the draft order. Looking at the upcoming schedule after the bye, a scenario could emerge where Washington is at No. 2 when push comes to shove.

Couple this with a new head coach and general manager likely coming into the fold, Howell's future beyond 2023 is murky. Something that was reflected by Jeff Wilson of CBS Sports, who had the Commanders picking LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in his latest mock draft.

"I know that Sam Howell is the Commanders QB and that he's had a solid Year 2 while showing signs of real growth. But there's also a pretty good chance new ownership is looking for a new coach, and often new coaches like to have "their" quarterback too. No player improved more this fall than Daniels, whose game reminds me a lot of Lamar Jackson."

Everyone likes a shiny new toy. While the prospect of choosing a quarterback is tempting, this looks like a good time to finally prioritize the offensive line with a premier left tackle prospect such as Olumuyiwa Fashanu.

Unless this critical area of the field improves, nothing will.
