Commanders QB Sam Howell's confidence boost

As previously stated this week, quarterback Sam Howell is emerging as one of the genuine bright spots from 2023 so far. The Washington Commanders might not have a winning record to show for their efforts as yet, but those in power can be highly encouraged by what they've seen from the former fifth-round pick overall.

Howell is growing in confidence and comfort with every passing week. It's been a long time since the Commanders had a genuine franchise presence under center, but the early signs suggest their search could be over.

The North Carolina product got another confidence boost from Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, who placed Howell atop his list of first and second-year quarterbacks - even coming in ahead of Brock Purdy - who's spearheaded the San Francisco 49ers' unbeaten start to the campaign.

"With the long-term in mind, here's how I'd rank 1st and 2nd year QBs based on what they've done individually, entering Week 6 (must have started 2+ games):

1a. Sam Howell
1b. Brock Purdy
3. C.J. Stroud
4. Anthony Richardson
5. Desmond Ridder
6. Kenny Pickett
7. Bryce Young"

Again, this is further evidence of Howell's production not going unnoticed by those around the league. Hopefully, the Commanders can do more for their signal-caller this weekend and come away from Week 6 with an important road victory.
