Commanders News: Sam Howell, Ron Rivera, Darius Slay and quick turnaround
By Dean Jones
Commanders QB Sam Howell lauded
As previously stated, this was a sensational display from quarterback Sam Howell. He was protective of the football, looked poised in the pocket, improvised when required, and demonstrated the clutch traits that the Washington Commanders have sorely lacked under center in recent years.
Howell was the first to admit after the game that this counted for nothing from his point of view. The Commanders didn't come away with an upset win, which is the most important thing for the signal-caller and a testament to his flourishing leadership skills despite a lack of experience.
When discussing Howell's performance, Ron Rivera couldn't have been more complimentary based on comments via Clutch Points. In particular, the head coach acknowledged how well the former Day 3 draft pick responded in the face of adversity within one of the most inhospitable environments in football.
"Well, first of all, it was a hell of a performance by Sam. He bounced back, he learned from last week, he grew and he got better. It was reflected in the way he played, it was reflected in the way he led our offense. Lot of positive things that we're gonna take from that. That's a plus."

Aside from a woeful outing against the Buffalo Bills - whose defense held the red-hot Miami Dolphins to 20 points after they dropped 70 on the Denver Broncos - it's been hugely encouraging from Howell's perspective. But getting back in the win column versus the Chicago Bears is the most important thing.
