Commanders to pursue L'Jarius Sneed?

It's no secret that the Washington Commanders have the league's most available salary-cap space as it stands. This could increase further depending on what restructures and early releases come to light. Even if general manager Adam Peters stands pat, they should be big players despite his intent to build through the draft and supplement in free agency.

Kendall Fuller is a free agent. Benjamin St-Juste struggled to make an impact. Emmanuel Forbes' rookie campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Therefore, it might be worth picking up a capable veteran cornerback who could assist immediately from the veteran pool.

After a phenomenal campaign with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, L'Jarius Sneed should be a hot commodity if he hits the open market. While that appears unlikely, Isaiah Denada Delgado from Sports Illustrated thought the Commanders might throw their hat into the ring thanks to Joe Whitt Jr.'s experience working with defensive backs.

"Now that [Joe] Whitt Jr., a former defensive backs coach, is in charge of the defense, it’d make sense for him to want a player like [L'Jarius] Sneed to establish his defensive culture and help players like 2023 rookie corner Emmanuel Forbes Jr. develop. If Sneed doesn’t sign an extension this month with the Chiefs, keep an eye on the Commanders as a potential suitor for the talented young cornerback when free agency season begins in the second week of March."

Sneed would be an immediate upgrade on arguably anything the Commanders have currently, even if Fuller does stick around. It won't be cheap, but the benefits are obvious. Even though the Chiefs will likely do everything in their power to ensure he gets a deserved extension as they go for their historic three-peat in 2024.
