NY Jets player wants Jacoby Brissett, not Sam Howell

After Connor Hughes from SNY speculated that Sam Howell could be a perfect fit for the New York Jets as Aaron Rodgers' backup, the inevitable stir followed. The Washington Commanders could be looking to go in a different direction - perhaps with the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. After an indifferent first season as the team's starting quarterback, the 2021 fifth-round pick's future is under a cloud this offseason.

Howell is sensible enough to know what might be coming. All the North Carolina product can do is keep working hard on his game. After that, everything else is out of his hands.

The speculation linking Howell with the Jets didn't go unnoticed by one established player. D.J. Reed commented on the potential switch, hinting that he'd prefer veteran Jacoby Brissett, who is set to depart the Commanders after one season.

Brissett is an established, capable signal caller. He flashed moments of genuine quality when Ron Rivera took Howell out of the firing line last season. Had it not been for an unfortunate hamstring injury, there's a good chance he'd have started the final two contests.

One would think the Jets want someone younger to develop behind Rodgers to take his starting spot one day. They'll probably give up on Zach Wilson at some stage in the coming weeks. Howell has more long-term upside than Brissett, but the move would cost draft capital whereas the former North Carolina State star is available in free agency.
