Commanders reaching the endgame
While head coaching vacancies around the league are down to just two after a flurry of moves this week, the Washington Commanders have stayed the course, remaining patient to land their preferred target. Once Championship Sunday is in the rearview mirror, things should start speeding up once again.
The Commanders are going to be busy over the next few days according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The senior insider stated those in power will speak to numerous shortlisted candidates involved in playoff engagements before deciding on their chosen man to take the franchise forward.
"The Commanders and Seahawks are eyeing coaches on Sunday's teams and waiting to interview them for their head-coaching jobs. The Commanders are waiting to hold second interviews with Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and assistant head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, as well as Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, league sources told ESPN."

Schefter added that the perceived consensus around Ben Johnson's appointment being a foregone conclusion might not be so straightforward. He claimed no frontrunner had emerged and every candidate was going to get a legitimate shot at securing the job. This includes Dan Quinn, who is also set for his second interview next week.
It would be a surprise if it wasn't Johnson despite Schefter's report adding some doubt. There's a reason why most others looking to land the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator pulled out in quick succession. But nothing should be ruled out if someone like Mike Macdonald wows the hiring committee during their meeting.
