Commanders plan for Sam Howell
Even though the Washington Commanders have highlighted their confidence in Sam Howell throughout the offseason, it would have been a nervous draft for the signal-caller. But as it turned out, the selection process was another major boost for the player.
The Commanders didn't draft a quarterback despite Will Levis and Hendon Hooker dropping to tempting levels. According to John Keim of ESPN citing team sources, there is a genuine belief within the building that Howell can emerge as a productive presence under center.
"But the Commanders really do like Howell, entering his second season, and sources within the team say they plan to give him first shot at the starting job in 2023. Team sources say the Commanders also like Howell because he's on a rookie contract, which has allowed them to make other moves such as re-signing defensive tackle Daron Payne. With a new ownership coming soon, coach Ron Rivera and his staff enter a crucial year and Howell is the guy who could make or break their fates. They need him to work."

This is going to make or break Ron Rivera's time with the Commanders. If Howell repays his faith and perhaps guides Washington to the postseason, then the head coach might get another year under the new ownership group.
If it all goes wrong, then Rivera is going to pay with his job and Howell could be relegated to backup duties under the new regime.
