Eric Bieniemy shifting Commanders offensive culture
Eric Bieniemy's presence has been felt from the moment he stood on the podium for his introductory press conference. The Washington Commanders are almost a separate operation on offense considering the new appointment's level of control, which is a far cry from the bland scheme deployed by Scott Turner in 2022 that had almost no genuine adjustments whatsoever.
One of the big ways Bieniemy has altered things is from a staff infrastructure standpoint. Guys have come and gone following his hiring, with more progressive coaches also getting promotions as the player-caller looks to establish better methods of communication and accountability.
This significant restructure was discussed by head coach Ron Rivera at the conclusion of last weekend's rookie minicamp via Bryan Manning of The Commanders Wire. Judging by his comments, this centers on Bienemy and his desire for different opinions in pursuit of one overall goal.
"We restructured the way the offensive coaching staff is gonna be structured. We’ve moved some guys around over a couple of positions so they can help the younger coaches that we’ve elevated as well. A big part of it is for EB; it gives him channels of communication. I mean, he can work directly with the tight end coach and the offensive line coach, but he can also go to Coach [Juan] Castillo and work with him directly as well, so he’s getting a different perspective from all those guys. Bieniemy is betting on himself to flourish without Andy Reid's presence overseeing offensive control. Something that would alleviate any remaining concerns en route to a future head coaching gig down the line.
And if everything goes better than expected, a top job will surely be on the table in 2024.
