Sam Howell coming full circle
This time last year, quarterback Sam Howell was gearing up for his first NFL start. One year later, it could be his last with the Washington Commanders.
This is all part of the NFL's fast-moving world. Howell's done well in tough circumstances. Unfortunately for the player, he's regressed at the wrong time. With the Commanders set to have a top-two selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, all signs point to another signal-caller from the college ranks coming into the building.
Howell was in a reflective mood when speaking to the media on Wednesday. He's thought a lot about the last year based on comments via the team's website. Whatever the future holds, the signal-caller is keen to put on one good display before a final decision is made on his status.
"It is crazy, man. I thought a little bit about that. This time last year, I was getting ready to play my first game, and now I have a full year under my belt. Definitely just so blessed to be where I am and just to be a part of this time. I just want to make sure I go out there and show on Sunday the type of player I really can be in this league. I just think I gotta get in a rhythm. I thought I was in a rhythm in the first half on Sunday [against the San Francisco 49ers], and in the second half, we kind of struggled to move the ball a little bit. I just think I gotta come out there and get into a rhythm and sustain that throughout the whole game."

All Howell can do is try to make the best of a bad situation versus a ferocious Dallas Cowboys defense to conclude the campaign. After that, it's out of his hands. Although it doesn't look too good right now.
