Commanders News: Ron Rivera, Carson Wentz, Curtis Samuel and Sam Howell
By Dean Jones
The dust is settling on early offseason workouts for the Washington Commanders and there is plenty to ponder for head coach Ron Rivera. Things went relatively well all things considered, but letting all their hard work in recent weeks go to waste is simply not an option.
And the news cycle continues even as the quietest portion of the NFL calendar year begins. Among the stories causing conversation include Carson Wentz getting a helping hand ahead of another opportunity, confidence in Curtis Samuel heading into 2023, Sam Howell being crowned QB1 by one of his primary pass-catchers, and Rivera's shaky ground.
Let's delve into each topic in more detail.
Former Commanders QB Carson Wentz gets help
With Carson Wentz still seeking alternative employment after his release by the Washington Commanders, the signal-caller is remaining vigilant and working hard in the event another team does come calling. The quarterback's recent career trajectory is deeply concerning, but one could argue he's the best remaining option on the market despite a steep fall from grace.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the former No. 2 overall selection has been spending time working out and watching game film with Jon Gruden in pursuit of improvements. The Super Bowl-winning former head coach has been cast aside from the league, but he's a supreme talent evaluator and is sure to offer Wentz some useful tips along the way.
"Free-agent QB Carson Wentz has been spending time in Tampa, throwing and studying film with former NFL head coach Jon Gruden. Wentz wants and intends to play this season, and is awaiting the right situation."

Whether it's enough for another organization to roll the dice with Wentz remains to be seen. But when or if the time comes, the veteran will take on board everything learned from Gruden in the hope of galvanizing his once-promising career.
