NFL perceptions on Commanders first-round pick

Many thought the Washington Commanders would select Emmanuel Forbes in the hours leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft. That proved to be the case after Ron Rivera and those in power became extremely impressed with the gifted cornerback throughout the assessment process.

Forbes has elite playmaking abilities that could be the missing piece of Washington's defensive puzzle. While the concerns about his weight cannot be overlooked, his credentials and approach can make a significant difference right out of the gate providing the player's transition goes smoothly.

When discussing the Commanders' decision to draft Forbes, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN expected some growing pains. But as his former coach Zach Arnett stated, the ball skills could lead to exceptional production long-term.

"NFL coaches agreed that, assuming his slim frame (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) isn't a major issue, his playmaking will translate. Mississippi State coach Zach Arnett considers Forbes an "interception machine" after watching him nab 14 picks over three years. "The best ball skills I've seen as a coach," Arnett told me. Washington expects some growing pains as Forbes learns to cover the likes of CeeDee Lamb and A.J. Brown twice per year. But the Commanders believe the long-term play will yield elite results."

Going up against NFL-caliber opposition on an every-down basis is going to be difficult. However, Forbes turned on the style in the SEC, which indicates he could pick things up pretty quickly.

Of course, competing opposite Washington's star wide receiver trio of Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson is only going to help. And as the old saying goes, iron sharpens iron.
