Commanders QB confusion

There were conflicting reports about Jacoby Brissett's status heading into Week 17. The veteran quarterback was projected to start before suffering a hamstring complication in practice. Some insiders ruled him out. Others claimed no decision will be made until the former third-round selection goes through warm-ups.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is more clued-up than most. He revealed Brissett is unlikely to feature depending on how he looks pre-game. If he cannot participate, then the Washington Commanders will provide Sam Howell with another shot after demoting him to No. 2 on the depth chart earlier this week.

"Commanders’ QB Jacoby Brissett, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a hamstring injury, is unlikely to play but the team wants to see how he feels in pre-game warmups before making any decisions, per source. If Brissett can’t start, Sam Howell will."

This is extremely awkward. Ron Rivera and Eric Bieniemy both stated that Howell needs to be taken out of the firing line after regressing considerably in recent weeks. It'll be an interesting pep talk after displaying their lack of faith that's for sure. But the signal-caller should take this chance to prove people wrong despite going up against a formidable adversary in the form of a vaunted San Francisco 49ers defense.

Jake Fromm being signed to the 53-man roster does nothing to dispel the notion Brissett won't suit up. Just another twist in the ongoing saga at football's most crucial position in Washington.
