Veteran TE linked to the Commanders

Considering all the acquisitions made by the Washington Commanders this offseason, it's been surprising to see the tight end position relatively ignored. However, this could also be a vote of confidence in the team's current options and their ability to progress under the exceptional offensive mind of Eric Bieniemy.

The Commanders have some additional salary-cap space after making Chase Roullier a salary-cap casualty. Most of this will be used to sign their draft class, but acquiring another veteran on the cheap cannot be dismissed entirely.

This was a topic discussed by Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus, who thought the one remaining move Washington should make before the season was to sign tight end Maxx Williams.

"Adding another depth piece in Maxx Williams couldn’t hurt now that he’s recovered from an unfortunate ACL tear sustained at the worst possible time in 2021. Through Week 5 of 2021, Williams was sporting a 77.6 receiving grade with 16 receptions, as many as he’d had in a full season since 2015. Perhaps more importantly, Williams’ 81.0 run-blocking grade since 2015 is the top mark in the NFL over the span."

There is some talent where Williams is concerned, albeit this comes with injury concerns that cannot be ignored. This makes the former second-round selection a major gamble looking at his current career trajectory.

It wouldn't cost the Commanders much to find out one way or another. But sticking with what they have in the hope players such as Armani Rogers and Cole Turner can thrive in Bieniemy's system might be the better way to go.
