Commanders TE Logan Thomas' status

The Washington Commanders need Logan Thomas on the field right out of the gate in 2023. Their lack of urgency to strengthen their tight end options throughout the spring dictated an extreme level of confidence in the converted quarterback, who looked the part during early workouts before once again suffering a frustrating injury complication.

Thomas is currently dealing with a calf issue that's kept him out for several weeks. The Commanders are taking things easy with the former Virginia Tech star in the hope he can be ready for Week 1, but the player was at least seen doing some conditioning work during the final public training camp practice.

When discussing Thomas' status, Ron Rivera stated via Sports Illustrated that conditioning will be the biggest issue for the veteran. But the head coach seemed reasonably pleased with how things are progressing.

"The biggest thing with Logan's going to be more about conditioning than anything else. He's been doing what he can as far as trying to keep himself conditioned. He's been working in the weight room with the strength conditioning guys as well. He's sharp. He's already up to speed on what we're doing offensively. And then once we get him back on the field it’ll be about getting his timing with the rest of the guys on the offense, especially with the quarterback too."

The Commanders have gotten decent production from Cole Turner this offseason, who could step in if or when Thomas cannot suit up. So hopes are high regarding this unit within a scheme that looks to be much friendlier for tight ends under Eric Bieniemy.
