Commanders linked with Justin Fields trade

While all signs point to the Washington Commanders selecting a quarterback at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, general manager Adam Peters is keeping his options open. The front office figure hasn't ruled anything out yet. He plans to do what's best for the franchise as they look to gradually build themselves into a contender over time.

Signing a veteran in free agency will be considered. The Commanders could also decide to pull the trigger on a trade if the right opportunity comes along. This was touted by Doug Farrar from USA Today Sports, who had Washington trading for Justin Fields and using their first-round selection on Malik Nabers at No. 2 in his latest mock draft.

"The Commanders trade with the Bears for Justin Fields, and decide in the shocker of the draft to take LSU receiver Malik Nabers over Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. as the first receiver. Harrison goes to the Cardinals with the fourth overall pick, and with the Bears taking Brian Thomas Jr. ninth overall, that’s quite a day for LSU!"

To say this would be a bombshell would be understating things. Trading for Fields is surprising enough, but taking Nabers over a potentially generational talent such as Marvin Harrison Jr. would send jaws to the floor. Simply put, this scenario is unlikely to become reality when it's all said and done.

If the Commanders did move for Fields - even though there's been no legitimate interest reported - the chances of trading back are high. If they stood pat at No. 2, taking Harrison or an elite-level offensive tackle such as Joe Alt would be more beneficial.
