Commanders QB dilemma

There are many needs to fill and some substantial resources to utilize. But unless the Washington Commanders solve their ongoing complications at football's most important position, it doesn't matter what happens elsewhere.

The Commanders have to find a long-term quarterback. Sam Howell didn't do enough to warrant another uncontested run to the No. 1 spot. If Caleb Williams goes to the Chicago Bears as expected, it leaves Washington faced with the difficult decision of choosing between Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

Rick Spielman - who was part of the Commanders' hiring process that led to Adam Peters and Dan Quinn - had some thoughts about Maye and Daniels. He didn't give too much away, but the former Minnesota Vikings general manager made a strong case for both sides based on comments via Sportskeeda.

"I like Drake Maye a lot. I had the opportunity to watch him play live in Miami last year. His size, I think he is very athletic. I think he has arm talent. He didn’t have the same talent around him this year. He made some poor decisions turning the ball over or forcing the ball where he probably could’ve kept it. Jayden Daniels is an incredible story, coming from ASU, where he was still developing you could say. Till he transferred to LSU and the strides he made from last year to this year and how much he has improved."

Nothing should be off the table currently, including a veteran free-agent signing or trading for someone like Justin Fields. That said, going down the draft route is the cheapest option to find a long-term solution. And hopefully, the Commanders won't be picking this high again for a long time.
