Commanders News: Josh Harris, Hard Knocks, Montez Sweat and Quan Martin

Commanders in tricky situation with Montez Sweat
It's common knowledge that the Washington Commanders could have a financial predicament on their hands with Montez Sweat and Chase Young with both defensive ends out of contract in 2024. Although not impossible, it's hard to make a case for appointing that much of their salary cap to the defensive line.
That is a problem for the future. But in Sweat's case, an extension might arrive once the Josh Harris group gets their $6.05 billion transaction approved before Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals rolls around.
In an ideal world, this would be the case. However, things could be tricky thanks in no small part to Young's presence according to Kristopher Knox from The Bleacher Report.
"Extending the 26-year-old early would be a common-sense decision for most teams, but it's a bit trickier for Washington. The Commanders have already invested heavily in defensive linemen Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, and they can only justify spending so much money on their defensive front. However, Sweat has proven that he belongs, and if Washington is at all concerned with Young future with the franchise, extending Sweat now would be sensible."

Young is the elephant in the room, so to speak. The Commanders didn't pick up his fifth-year option after a rough two years, but they have a large problem if the former No. 2 overall selection out of Ohio State stays healthy and breaks out in 2023.
Watching how this particular dynamic unfolds will be fascinating. And the ramifications will be severe.
