Which Washington Commanders news stories are hitting the headlines with just five days remaining until the NFL finally approves the team's sale?

Commanders DT Jonathan Allen tabbed as primary building block

Nobody associated with the Washington Commanders underestimates the importance of Jonathan Allen on or off the field. The formidable defensive tackle is among the league's best at the position and has been for some time, earning his second-straight Pro Bowl last season after attaining 7.5 sacks and 65 tackles.

It came as no surprise to see Allen named Washington's primary foundational building block by Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus recently. The writer highlighted his partnership with Daron Payne as one that'll continue to flourish, which should become the NFL's best interior tandem in 2023 if both meet their specific targets.

"While Daron Payne received a gigantic and well-deserved extension this offseason, Jonathan Allen is still arguably the best player on this defensive line, earning his third consecutive pass-rush grade above 80.0. His 161 total pressures and 15.5% pass-rush win rate since 2020 both rank fourth among interior defenders."

Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson were the other two pieced selected by Spielberger. But there's no doubt Allen will be tasked with significant responsibilities as a tone-setter and locker-room leader throughout a critical campaign for the franchise.
