Commanders could go back to Sam Howell

Jacoby Brissett's injury is the big talking point right now. There didn't appear to be much concern from head coach Ron Rivera's point of view, but it's something to monitor heading into the Washington Commanders' daunting test against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.

If the Commanders decide Brissett cannot perform to the best of his ability thanks to the complication, Sam Howell will get another chance to prove his worth. After two consecutive benchings and being demoted on the depth chart, the former fifth-round selection's immediate inclusion would be the latest in a long line of quarterback twists under Rivera's leadership.

The head coach seemed to have confidence in Howell despite dropping him from the lineup. There have been some tremendous flashes versus high-caliber opposition this season. However, his recent regression means the jury is still out on his future in Washington beyond the current campaign.

Howell got plenty of reps with the starting unit on Friday as the Commanders prepared for every eventuality. Nobody is expecting anything other than a heavy loss versus the Niners. So more relaxed expectations might help the North Carolina product if he gets the opportunity to bounce back.

As previously stated, it would be surprising if Brissett didn't suit up. But nothing can be ruled out considering the drama surrounding football's most pivotal position since Rivera took charge.
