Commanders QB Sam Howell assessed

There was obviously an extra level of adrenaline within Sam Howell heading into Week 1. The magnitude of the challenge ahead wasn't lost on the quarterback, which led to an up-and-down display during the Washington Commanders' win over the Arizona Cardinals.

It looked for a long time as if the result wouldn't go Howell's way. But the signal-caller was given a window by Washington's exceptional defense and he did just enough to get his team over the line.

When assessing Howell's production, NBC Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms compared him to a better version of Taylor Heinicke via USA Today Sports. He also highlighted how much better the offensive line could become with more familiarity as the campaign progresses.

"Sam Howell did some good things. He made a few young quarterback mistakes. Some sacks, misses a throw. A lot of people are saying it was Heinicke-esque. It’s a little of that. But this guy has more talent than [Taylor] Heinicke. Sam Howell looks like he belongs; he really does. Their offensive line, I think, is going to be better this year. Even though it was not their best showing here."

Howell will get better and one could forgive the former fifth-round selection for being a little nervous in his second career start. How he performs this weekend at the Denver Broncos during his debut NFL road game will be a solid measuring stick.
