Commanders want more from Sam Howell
Sam Howell is gaining national traction in his bid to become Washington Commanders starting quarterback long term. The former fifth-round selection is making a strong case no matter how many changes Josh Harris' ownership group implements when the campaign concludes, but a strong end to the season will enhance his chances considerably.
When discussing Howell's growth from Week 1 up to now, Ron Rivera stated via Sports Illustrated that it's been a gradual process. The head coach is also looking for more in the coming weeks before some conclusions are drawn.
"I wouldn't say he grasped it quickly. He's growing in it. Those first few games, obviously that first month and a half, the sacks were a concern. There's been a growth period, and I just think he's on time. This is kind of where you would expect it to be, playing him as much as we've played him, giving him the opportunities that he's had. He's shown some good growth. And again, he still has a ways to go. By no means are we where we want to be."

Coping with the intimidating atmosphere at Lumen Field would be a tremendous feather in Howell's cap. It's hard to ignore the poise improvements in recent weeks, but removing questionable decisions that result in costly turnovers is the next big challenge for the one-time North Carolina star.
