Commanders must give up historical haul

While the benefits of drafting Caleb Williams and bringing him home to his boyhood team are obvious, fairytales are seldom seen where the NFL is concerned. The Washington Commanders are within touching distance of the USC signal-caller. Unfortunately, the Chicago Bears control the quarterback's destiny.

Much has been made about the Bears trading down from No. 1 last year. They got a huge compensation package from the Carolina Panthers that eventually included the No. 1 pick in 2024. Justin Fields played well last season, but the temptation to select Williams could prove too alluring when push comes to shove.

Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network shed further light on this situation via USA Today Sports. The respected insider claimed it would take a historical haul from the Commanders or anyone else to get a deal done. There is also a belief around the NFL that the Bears will end up taking Williams.

"It would take a historic haul, something crazy for the Bears to move off of the No. 1 overall selection. That bit of knowledge contains wide-ranging ramifications. First of all, that is an indication, absent some sort of wild draft compensation for someone trying to move up for Caleb Williams, that is a sign they will likely take a quarterback No. 1."

This could be a ploy from general manager Ryan Poles to instigate a bidding war - either for the No. 1 pick or for Fields. But all signs point to the Commanders being faced with a decision between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels when they go on the clock.
