Commanders trade up for Caleb Williams in CBS Sports mock

Kliff Kingsbury's arrival as offensive coordinator was swiftly followed by speculation surrounding a bold trade up to No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft for quarterback Caleb Williams. The DC native is projected to be the first player taken according to most analysts. Even if those in power believe he's the franchise-caliber presence they've been craving, it's out of their hands.

The Chicago Bears hold all the aces. Ryan Poles is facing a difficult decision to make that also has implications for quarterback Justin Fields. If the general manager's belief in his current starting quarterback is steadfast, then trading down with the Commanders becomes a genuine option.

This was a sentiment echoed by Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports, who had Washington going up to No. 1 for Williams in his latest mock draft.

"The Commanders make the bold ascension to pair Williams with Kliff Kingsbury in the nation's capital. New owner Josh Harris puts his stamp on his team."

There is a long way to go and a lot must go right for the Commanders to make this scenario become reality. Williams has some special gifts that cannot be taught. The compensation would be steep, but the rewards might be substantial if the hometown hero leads his boyhood team back to prominence.
