Commanders OL Sam Cosmi set for breakout?

Things might not have gone according to plan for Sam Cosmi as an edge protector since joining the Washington Commanders. But those in power are not willing to give up on the former second-round selection by any stretch.

Despite signing veteran Andrew Wylie to hopefully solidify the right tackle position in free agency, Cosmi is now embarking on an important switch to the interior heading into Year 3 of his professional career, One that will go a long way to determining what his long-term future with the franchise might look like.

The early signs are promising throughout off-season workouts. Cosmi has the athleticism to make a smooth transition and according to Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus, could be set for a genuine third-year breakout in 2023.

"Playing more than 450 snaps in each of his first two seasons in the league, Cosmi has produced 70.0-plus PFF grades in both years. Most of his work so far has come at tackle, but there’s nothing that we’ve seen to suggest that he won’t be a success now that he’s kicking inside to guard. He’s graded higher as a run blocker than as a pass blocker in the NFL, so the position move should serve him well."

This would represent the best-case scenario for the one-time Texas star. Something that could finally stabilize one part of the Commanders' offensive line interior at long last.
