Commanders have high hopes for Andre Jones Jr.
The Washington Commanders have unearthed a number of late-round gems in recent years. Those in power will be hoping edge rusher Andre Jones Jr. can add his name to the list.
Jones became Washington's final pick in the 2023 NFL Draft at No. 233 overall. He will be 25 years old in October - which is far older than normal prospects - but general manager Martin Mayhew via Sports Illustrated seemed confident the player can pick things up quickly and fulfill his promise.
"Yeah, well for me, the age comes into play obviously, but for a lot of these guys, it is really how much football they've played. This guy has a lot of upside, a lot of developmental potential despite his age. So we're looking forward to working with him. I mean, he's got a lot of athleticism. He's got a great first step, he's got a lot of traits that you want. And he has some tools and our coaches can develop those tools."

The former Louisiana standout has his work cut out carving out a rotational role on Washington's stacked defensive front. However, his athleticism might indicate a role as a depth outside linebacker that can be brought in during specific pass-rushing situations.
Time isn't on his side, obviously. But it's something that is becoming more commonplace as lucrative NIL deals tempt prospects into seeing out their college commitments.
