Commanders QB Jayden Daniels' status

All eyes will be on Jayden Daniels throughout camp. The Washington Commanders are expecting big things from the quarterback after taking him No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. That's a lot to ask of any incoming rookie, but his exceptional transition over early workouts suggests he's capable of reaching his billing.

Daniels takes everything in his stride. He puts in the hard yards and prepares better than almost anybody. That gives him the platform to be confident, fully immersed in schematic concepts, and lead through outstanding production and a natural aura that players gravitate towards quickly.

It would be a shock if Daniels wasn't the starter in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. High draft picks don't tend to get much bedding in time these days, especially those who look pro-ready. However, head coach Dan Quinn stated that it will be an ongoing process in the coming weeks before the time is officially right to name the former LSU star as the team's No. 1 option.

"It's not a secret, but it is a journey and a process. And so, as we're going as he's [Jayden Daniels] ready, we'll know. And when he's ready, he'll also know. But as far as reps go, obviously with him and Marcus [Mariota] moving around, there will be certain days when they'll feature more than others. Through practices, through scrimmages, and preseason games, that's where the journey will take us. I'm not trying to hold back the info. But when we know, we'll say."

It'll be fascinating to watch Daniels in a more intense setting. Keeping a level head, putting his playmakers in positions to thrive, pushing everyone around him to be great, and maintaining his outstanding work ethic should serve him well. After that, becoming the opening day starter is merely a formality.

Daniels carries the weight of an entire franchise on his shoulders. That comes with a different type of pressure, but it's nothing the Heisman Trophy winner isn't ready for.

He'll know taking the Commanders - one of the league's most historic franchises - back to the NFL's top table comes with untold benefits attached. It's early days, but the dual-threat weapon could be the superstar quarterback this team has craved for decades.
