Commanders 2023 midseason awards: MVP

  • Sam Howell - Quarterback

While playing behind a porous offensive line, Sam Howell has taken some shots but has continued to get up and bounce back. The Washington Commanders have gone from Houdini Heinicke to Hero Howell, and the fanbase could not be happier.

Howell has been forced to throw the ball a lot in this offense. The quarterback has responded with the most completions in the NFL, the second-most passing yards, and more fourth-quarter comebacks than Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa.

All of this is in spite of being harassed behind a subpar offensive line and leading the league in sacks. Although things have improved from a protection standpoint over the last fortnight.

At 23 years old, Howell has been asked to put the team on his shoulders. The former fifth-round pick has risen to the challenge, with got Jonathan Allen's seal of approval recently.

Howell has not only impressed his coaches and teammates. But has also earned praise from players across the league, including both Jason and Travis Kelce.

Is he perfect? No. Does he still hold the ball too long? Occasionally.

But, if he can keep up this level of play, Howell could go on to be one of the best quarterbacks in franchise history.
