Commanders depth chart (defense)

Interior Defensive Line (8)

  • Jonathan Allen
  • Daron Payne
  • Phidarian Mathis
  • Haggai Ndubuisi
  • Johnny Newton
  • Norell Pollard
  • Benning Potoa’e
  • John Ridgeway

We have no idea how new Washington Commanders' defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. will employ his troops. But we can expect a lot of creative shifting through all three levels.

Pollard may play outside, and Newton’s injury leaves a hole that Mathis or Ridgeway needs to step into. Ndubuisi is an International Pathway player, like David Bada, who was with the team for the past four seasons.

Edge Rusher (8)

  • Dorance Armstrong Jr.
  • Clelin Ferrell
  • Dante Fowler Jr.
  • Jalen Harris
  • K.J. Henry
  • Javontae Jean-Baptiste
  • Andre Jones Jr.
  • Efe Obada

Ferrell will be the technical starter over Fowler, though both should log a lot of snaps at the revamped edge position. Jean-Baptiste may line up at linebacker. A breakout year from Henry as a situational pass rusher would be enormous.

Linebackers (8)

  • Jamin Davis
  • Frankie Luvu
  • Bobby Wagner
  • Bo Bauer
  • Keandre Jones
  • Jordan Magee
  • Anthony Pittman
  • Mykal Walker

Davis is the only linebacker who was on the Commanders last season. His rookie option was not picked up so he may be gone after 2024.

The team hopes for big things from Luvu and Magee as the cornerstones of the new linebacking corps. Bauer would be considered an undrafted free agent had injury not cost him the 2023 season. The former Notre Dame star is a very intriguing prospect.

Cornerbacks (12)

  • Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
  • Mike Sainristil
  • Benjamin St-Juste
  • Chigoze Anusiem
  • Tariq Castro-Fields
  • Michael Davis
  • Christian Holmes
  • Noah Igbinoghene
  • Kyu Blu Kelly
  • James Pierre
  • Nick Whiteside II
  • A.J. Woods

This is the most unsettled position on the team. Plenty of role players, but no proven stars. Look for another veteran addition or two before the start of training camp.

Safety (8)

  • Jeremy Chinn
  • Darrick Forrest
  • Quan Martin
  • Percy Butler
  • Dominique Hampton
  • Ben Nikkel
  • Tyler Owens
  • Jeremy Reaves

Forrest should reclaim his starting free safety spot from Butler now that he is healthy. He struggled in 2022 when former strong safety Kam Curl was out, so his rapport with Chinn will bear watching.

Martin's role within Dan Quinn and Whitt's scheme is uncertain, but he will be on the field quite a bit.

Commanders depth chart (specialists)

  • Brandon McManus - K
  • Tyler Ott - LS
  • Tress Way - P

These positions are set, with no competition currently on the roster. Kickoff and punt returners are wide open and should be drawn from a half dozen candidates who play wide receiver and cornerback.

We will check back on the roster throughout the summer as it comes into clearer focus.
