There was more excitement in the air than normal as the Washington Commanders embarked on Day 14 of training camp. This one had special significance, with head coach Dan Quinn leading his men into battle against the Miami Dolphins.

Mike McDaniel's squad is hoping to make some noise in the postseason in 2024 after falling short of lofty expectations last time around. The Commanders aren't quite there just yet in Year 1 of their substantial rebuild, so this was another good measuring stick to see how far they've come in a relatively short space of time.

The weather couldn't have been more contrasting to their first joint practice of the summer versus the New York Jets. This led to a much more productive session, which was once again physical and competitive. It also left the coaching staff with plenty to ponder with final cuts upcoming around the league.

With this in mind, here are seven critical observations from Day 14 of Washington's training camp.

Andre Jones Jr. loses his cool

Dan Quinn stressed the need for his players to remain disciplined in a more heated environment versus legitimate NFL opposition. That's easier said than done - especially in the humid Florida climate - so it came as no real shock when tempers flared when physicality ramped up early on.

The biggest flare-up centered on edge rusher Andre Jones Jr. He didn't take kindly to something done by veteran tight end Jonnu Smith and overreacted, throwing his helmet and going into a scuffle head first according to those watching on.

Thankfully, it didn't escalate into something more. Whether this impacts Jones' hopes of making the roster remains to be seen. At the same time, the Commanders have been a proverbial doormat for too long. It's nice to see a bit of fight returning at long last.
