Johnny Newton - Commanders DL

This is dependent on whether Johnny Newton is healthy enough to participate in his first NFL training camp. The defensive lineman is currently recovering from two surgeries - one on either foot. Dan Quinn gave an encouraging prognosis before his team headed off on their summer break. We'll find out for sure when the time comes to get down to business.

The Commanders couldn't believe their luck when Newton fell into their laps at No. 36 overall. He was one of 20 prospects who got the gold standard tag from Adam Peters and his team. It wasn't a position of need thanks to the presence of Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, but those in power thought this opportunity was too good to turn down.

It's hard to gauge what Newton might be capable of in Year 1 of his professional career. The former Illinois standout's got the physical attributes to become a game-wrecking force right out of the gate depending on Washington's schematic alignment. But the lineman must prove his fitness and show no ill effects from his offseason complications upon receiving medical clearance to take part.

Newton could be one of the draft's biggest steals when it's all said and done. However, he's got some concerns to alleviate in the coming weeks.

Chigozie Anusiem - Commanders CB

The Commanders gave Chigozie Anusiem a decent contract to secure his services when the undrafted free-agent frenzy commenced. Multiple reports suggest half the league was looking to acquire the talented cornerback. That got the price up accordingly, but it doesn't guarantee he'll be part of Washington's plans.

Anusiem has some intriguing athleticism and instincts to call upon. Asking him to come in and fill starting responsibilities immediately is unfair. However, the former Colorado State star has an opportunity to secure his spot on the 53-man roster looking at the options available.

Things are hanging in the balance for Anusiem heading into camp. Getting off to a fast start is crucial. The first-year pro must also shine whenever reps come his way during the preseason. How he performs will go a long way to determining his initial fate.

Even if Anusiem doesn't make the team, he's a candidate for the practice squad if someone doesn't scoop him off the waiver wire. But make no mistake, the defensive back will be aiming much higher.
